Two weeks


Our newest lockdown babies are two weeks old today! They had their first outing in the grass while their box was being cleaned, were sniffed at by the goat, and some of them learned to jump onto the edge of their box. Big day for these little guys!
Their beautiful patterns are really starting to show, and they're so curious about their surroundings. 

We also explored more of the lovely forests around us. R's little legs got tired, and he went back to the car with Hubby, but myself and the girls managed the whole new walk. 

Discovering hidden gems near our home has been one of my favourite things about the last year. Definitely makes me appreciate where we live even more!

Busy, busy

It's been a while. We got our sauna stove, stones, and chimney flue from Finland, in an enormous crate. There was much excitement!  My folks also sent some of my old things. I showed the kids some old photos. "You used to have such nice clothes, and now you're just a fashion disaster! What happened, mama?" was the verdict. Ah, children. Delightful creatures.  We manage to do a night of camping. It was little lady's first time in a tent, and I think she liked it. R slept the night through for the first time in three years, so I actually felt quite rested. And I did have the cutest little hot water bottle in my sleeping bag. The most expensive free eggs ever

Yesterday Hubby left me unattended for the day, and went to help a friend with a project. I went for my morning walk with the little people and the dog. A was walking ahead with Scout, and ran back with the exciting news that there was actually a person on a bike approaching from the end of the road. (We live on a cul-de-sac, where you see maybe three cars a day, and know every one of them.) It was our newest neighbour, whom we hadn't met before. We exchanged greetings, and launched straight into talking about our various birds.  He invited us over later to see his collection, and said he had some spare eggs he'd like to give to a good home. I said I had some fertile duck eggs to trade, and a deal was made. The kids and I were equally excited to see his birds. The turkey tom was surprisingly the highlight, even though he also had a peacock. The poor peacock was sad after losing his mate to a fox, so we didn't see a tail feather display. Garden catch-up

The chicks have graduated to the great outdoors. Well, nearly! They're getting a gentle introduction to soil and grass underfoot (or -claw) in an ibc tank full of compost. They seem very happy, and are getting regular room service of pellets and water from A. The plan is to keep bringing them in for nights until they are six weeks, and then let them out into the orchard with the ducks.  I took a whole day off gardening during the week, so I had an extra helper today to make up for lost time.  We got tomatoes planted into the tunnel, some herbs and peas out into the beds, peppers moved into bigger pots and did some work on the overgrown beds too. I stopped to admire my beans in the middle of my battle with mystery stabby weeds. Between the rooster attacks, nettle stings and what I presume are some sort of thistles stabbing me in the shins, I feel like I have earned my cup of tea by the end of the day!
